We headed toward Nashville up the Cumberland River but no marina in Nashville so it looks like we will stay at Lake Barkley State Park for a few days and maybe do some fishing. Looking back at the Green Turtle Bay marina and the Yacht Clubhouse on the stilts. We were near the far end of that dock - almost every boat is a "Looper" boat. More of the expansive Green Turtle Bay marina. Lake Barkley formed after they dammed the Cumberland River so the contours and islands and bars are everywhere. Old castle looking building - I thought the marina guy said it was a low security prison. Without a good chart plotter and staying alert to follow the channel we would be running aground frequently. We could see the channel because for some reason the wind didn't affect the surface water over the old river bed. We are next to a very large houseboat.

Lay-over day in Paducah. Lots of history here. Oil change day - got it done but more work than it should have been. We really got bounced around on the river side of the dock until after 11 PM last night. Shifted to the inside of the dock this morning - seems smoother already. Fair amount of rain today but I don't think enough to raise the river. Almost 1000 foot long 15 pack barge tow - the wake from these guys makes the river side of the dock rock. The top of the dock poles is 50+ feet off the water to allow the whole dock, gas, water electric and everything float up with the water when it floods. Strange looking but ingenious system for flood mitigation. Paducah murals are on the city side of their flood wall. Barge loading loaded end almost under water non-loaded end out of the water. Their murals tell the history of the city. Off to the Cumberland River in the morning - Barkley lock and then Green Turtle Bay Marina for a couple of days of R & R.
Getting ready to head down lake
After 20+ years of talking and planning and 5 years rehabilitating and working on the Ark to get her in ship shape along with getting the captain and first mate up to speed with her operations we are close to leaving the Ashland Marina and starting our Great Loop adventure - this is my first shot at a blog to keep family and friends up to speed with our progress. We will try to post photos and thoughts as we loop out the Eastern half of the USA by water.
