Back on the Great Lakes.

We got past the last of the low bridges on the Western Erie Canal - our only way home with the border closed due to the little tyrant in Ottawa. We reconstituted the top of the Ark and prepared for our time on the Great Lakes. We finally got the exciter assembly for the Gennygator - Madeline received and resent to us - this time it was the part we needed and the Genny is back online for the first time since St Augustine, FL!

Black Rock Canal has one lock with a 5 foot lift - only half of the downstream door opens but that is enough for us.

Beautiful morning as we headed to Buffalo.

This bridge was a funny cantilever lift.

Exiting the lock and that bridge rotates out of the way.

By the time the lock doors were open the bridge had swung open and we were on the move.

Black Rock Canal has the lock and bridges but very little current. Over that concrete wall is the Niagara river with 16+ mph of current.

Lake Erie looked inviting and pretty calm.

Erie kept getting smoother for the first 50 miles.

Erie Yacht Club for the night - over 36 sailboats headed out for their weekly Wednesday night race.

Nebo for the day - we changed the Racor's again at Smith Boys and they were black with algae but the Ark got to get up on plane and breathe today. Cleveland, OH tomorrow and the Rock n Roll hall of fame.

We got to Ashland marina 9/1 - 3 wind days in Houghton and then a one day calm window - 142 miles. Predawn dog walk - zero wind. Looking back East from the dock in Houghton at sunrise. Ready to leave on our last travel day before home dock. Off the dock 7 AM Eastern. Beautiful morning heading out the Keewenaw canal. The big pond was calm most of the way. Porcupine Mountain ski area. Copper Peak ski flying Some times there was zero wind and others we got up to about 1.5 foot waves. John was with us on the Ark when we left Ashland 8/15/21 - escort boat in 9/1/22. Stopped for a photo about 2 PM Central time - 142 miles 8 hours - included a stop for fuel and a dog walk at Saxon Harbor Ocky droned us but I can't find the drone pictures. George Kemp to Grand Marais and then on to Marquette.

We waited out the rain and low visibility at George Kemp and it was the right choice. We were able to run on plane all day and got into Grand Marais early. Visited looper friends Terry and Connie who we met during our time at Kingfisher Bay in Demopolis, AL. 8/27 we had more wind than predicted but we were still able to run on plane and got into Marquette about noon just as the wind was picking up steam. Leaving George Kemp at sunrise - helped off the dock by Scott - skipper of the Jenna Lou II that was docked very close to us in Ashland for a year - they are just starting their loop and we wish them smooth cruising and a great time! Looking like we'll be in Demopolis for another week.

 Foot infection has us slowed down and with the weather/flood window closing it looks like we will celebrate Easter in Demopolis. Looking like rain and rapidly rising river for the next few days. Our friends the Gandy's in Jackson MS got Lez set up to see a Dr there tomorrow - foot finally looking a bit better but we don't want to risk trouble 200 miles from medical care on the river. The marina workers were busy this afternoon trying to corner a 5-6 foot water moccasin under our dock - my advice was to eliminate with extreme prejudice. These critters are all over and try to nest in every nook and cranny. Just under 1" long. We are both double aces taking out over 10 enemy aircraft apiece.  They have a nice pool here and are working every day with the landscaping. Roses are coming into bloom.
